Under the Shade of the Ficus Religiosa

If I walk on, where am I going?
I’ve been there before, but seeing is knowing
If I sit still, waiting for my moment
And it finally shows, how will I know it?
If I hang on, hope can go straight to hell
And I say “let it rot!” Someone break this spell

Let me lean on it, that age-old fix
Let me reach in my deep bag of tricks
But oh my god -
What if we’re only people?

If I stand up in your time-tested shoes
What have I done? It’s just the same old news
If I reach out with my ink, tongue-in-cheek
Blast you with these sirens, show you how to speak
If it helps you, and it guides you back to your place
Turn out the anger that’s seething on your face

Let me lean on it, that age-old fix
Let me reach in my deep bag of tricks
But oh my god -
What if we’re only people?

If I lie down, in a desperate search for sleep
Terrorize me baby, I ain’t feeling peace
But I’ll stay here, in my cool and comfy shade
Looking down at you, for I have been remade
And I’ll kill this, vision that hasn’t gone away
Mama, I heard you say that I’m never gonna change

Let me lean on it, that age-old fix
Let me reach in my deep bag of tricks
But oh my god -
What if we’re only people?
